Pure Bean Coffee Roasters: A Blend of History and Modernity



I had the incredible opportunity to photograph Pure Bean Coffee Roasters in South Dakota for a feature in Architectural Digest’s “Most Beautiful Coffee Shops Across the United States.” This project was a unique blend of capturing the artisanal craft of coffee making and the historical charm of a reclaimed building.

The Coffee Craft

At Pure Bean, coffee isn’t just a drink; it’s an experience. Photographing the staff as they crafted beautiful lattes and custom brewed coffee drinks was a delight. Their skill and passion for coffee shine through in every cup. One standout feature is their unique espresso machine, the Mavam. Unlike traditional machines, the Mavam has all its brew tanks hidden underneath the counter, allowing the barista to engage with customers without a barrier. This design not only looks sleek but also enhances the customer experience, making each interaction more personal.


A Historic Space

Pure Bean’s location is steeped in history. The building, once a dairy milk factory bottling milk for the Rapid City area, has been meticulously reclaimed and transformed into a modern coffee haven. Photographing the space and its exterior was a journey through time, showcasing the blend of old and new. The use of eco-friendly products further highlights their commitment to sustainability and respect for the environment.

Telling Their Story

Capturing the essence of Pure Bean Coffee Roasters was more than just a photography job; it was about telling their story. The rich history of the building, combined with their innovative approach to coffee making, earned them the title of South Dakota’s most beautiful coffee shop in the Architectural Digest feature. I am incredibly proud to have been a part of this journey, showcasing their dedication to quality and community.

Westfax Brewing Company

Capturing the Vibrant Transformation of Westfax Brewing Company We had the pleasure of working with WESTFAX Brewing to capture their newly renovated exterior and expanded patio space, located at the historic Casita Bonita on Colfax. This update comes just in time for the summer, providing the perfect spot for patrons to enjoy their favorite brews outdoors. We headed to the Denver location for a dynamic photo and video shoot, creating a quick 30-second Instagram/TikTok video for their marketing campaign. The updated exterior images of their patio and storefront turned out fantastic, highlighting the vibrant atmosphere of the brewery. The shoot was extra special as it featured their loyal patrons who turned up on a lively Saturday night, excited to be part of the marketing campaign. Their genuine enjoyment and energy were captured beautifully, adding authenticity to the photos. We also had the opportunity to photograph the dedicated staff in action, brewing a new batch of beer.

Capturing the Essence of Susan Hable’s Handmade Jewelry Collection

A Journey Through Light and Craftsmanship Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to photograph Susan Hable’s latest jewelry collection, a stunning array of hand-carved emeralds, lapis, 24-karat gold, and coral pieces, all meticulously crafted in India. Susan, renowned for her design prowess, personally sourced and organized these materials, working closely with skilled craftsmen to bring this collection to life. The Photoshoot Experience The shoot took place in a beautifully lit living room, where we utilized natural light bouncing through a glass panel door to create a radiant glow around the model. The setting was perfect for highlighting the delicate details and luxurious feel of the jewelry. However, not having my full lighting kit posed a challenge. The shifting sunlight made it difficult to maintain a consistent feel across all images. Thankfully, we discovered another door that provided a similar lighting effect, allowing us to achieve the desired look throughout the shoot.
